Proprietor and Master Chef Roy Chen, born in China, began his culinary career in 1976 in various cities in mainland China as an apprentice. He then collected valuable experience studying and working in Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan. In 1985, Chef Chen was one of 2 principles in starting The Dynasty at Tiburon, CA where he served as half owner and executive chef until 1992. Later, he discovered a great opportunity to start his own restaurant, the Mandarin Flower in Moraga, CA, where he would successfully serve numerous satisfied patrons from 1993 until 2002. In June of 2002 he would accept his next challenge with open arms, as he established Sun Mei Restaurant in Walnut Creek, CA. He started the business with a bang, literally, with a magnificent performance featuring fireworks, traditional Chinese Lion Dance, and musicians.

Chef Chen is a philanthropist who donates to various East Bay schools, church groups, and community functions. His annual Oakland Thanksgiving volunteer work has earned him the prestigious Mayor’s Award of Recognition. His wishes are to continue to serve the needy causes within our community and to possibly extend his efforts to other bay area charities.
